Siemens and Ericsson have signed an agreement with Panafon Greek Telecommunications Company (Vodafone Greece) for UMTS deployment. Siemens mobile will equip the Greek subsidiary of the Vodafone Group with UMTS radio access technology while Ericsson will deploy 3G core network technology and provide engineering and consultancy services. Operations will start in the following weeks, while the first stage of UMTS network deployment should be ready by the end of the year.

In the first phase, Vodafone Greece wants to cover the Athens conurbation, which is deemed to be accomplished by end 2003. “The many years of cooperation with Ericsson and Siemens will be expanded now to cover the UMTS core network in Greece. Through this we will soon be able to offer our customers in Greece innovative third-generation mobile services,” said George Koronias, CEO Vodafone Greece.

Vodafone Greece, owned by Vodafone Group (65.4 percent) and the Greek telecommunications group Intracom (9.4 percent), is the second largest mobile provider in Greece with around 3.6 million customers and a market share of 34.7 percent.
