Nokia chairman and CEO, Jorma Ollila, has been awarded honorary membership of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Ollila‘s citation for the award is for contributions to launching mobile communications, “a major global industry that has fundamentally changed the way people communicate”. Since 1981, the IEEE has bestowed 32 Honorary Memberships. Ollila received one of two IEEE Honorary Memberships granted in 2003. The IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional society with more than 380,000 members in approximately 150 countries.

“Jorma Ollila has transformed Nokia from a national conglomerate into a global leader in mobile communications – not to mention one of the best-managed and most innovative high tech companies in the world. He has uncommon leadership ability, and it seems Nokia’s slogan, Connecting People, epitomizes both what the company does best, and the talents its leader possesses,” IEEE President, Michael S. Adler commented.
