Siemens Mobile has won a 20 million euros contract to deliver and install GSM radio technology and microwave radio relay at Serbian operator 063 Mobtel Srbija (Mobtel). This contract is part of Mobtel efforts to expand their GSM network.
Siemens Mobile, has described this partnership as a two phase project, to be completed by the end of this year. Through this period it will deliver and install base stations, switching systems, and microwave technology to connect the base stations with each other.
Mobtel is Serbias second mobile operator, with about two million subscribers. In the past year, Mobtel integrated GPRS technology in its network, to meet the rising needs of its customers for new applications. By the end of 2004 the operator wants to take the next step and introduce EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), to permit higher data rates than GPRS and hence allow multimedia data services, such as videostreaming.
