Alcatel announced it has been awarded a contract for the design and implementation of an integrated communications and security solution for the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS-Group).
As part of NMBS-Group railway development project concerning the Antwerp central station and more globally the Belgian railways, Alcatel will deploy its solution along the north-south junction crossing Antwerp.
Per this contract, Alcatel will integrate and deploy its solution along the north-south junction between Antwerp-Berchem and Antwerp-Luchtbal which comprises a 3,8 kilometers railway tunnel. This deployment will meet NMBS-Group requirements in terms of safety and security, improving rail network operational efficiency by gathering different kinds of information, such as surveillance signals and access control, into a central management platform.
As from the end of 2006, the north-south junction will enable trains, domestic as well as international trains, to run directly from the platform level – 2 underneath the city to the north of Antwerp and the Netherlands and vice versa. The railway tunnel under the Central Station also constitutes the hub for a new high-speed line to the Netherlands in 2007. Customers will benefit from a doubled station capacity, an easier and faster connection with stations located in the North of Antwerp, an improved comfort and an optimized accessibility of the station, notably for the persons with reduced mobility.
‘With a good understanding of our requirements regarding safety and security, Alcatel will help us to increase our operational efficiency,’ says Giovanni Palmieri, General Manager ICT from NMBS-Holding. ‘We are convinced that Alcatel will deliver a customized integrated communications solution to help us reach our business objectives in the next few years. ‘
‘Alcatel is proud to contribute to such a large-scaled rail development project,’ said Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel’s integration and services activities. ‘Alcatel is committed to utilize its strong expertise and experience to deliver the most efficient products and services integrating Alcatel and if appropriate, non-Alcatel products and services. This project further demonstrates Alcatel’s capacity to serve the transport market.’
