British Airways announced the closure of two of its call centres today with the loss of 400 jobs as part of its drive to cut costs. Citing the growing number of online bookings, BA said it would shut down a call centre in Glasgow with the loss of 350 jobs while a further 50 would go with the closure of a site in London next March.

‘This decision is not about moving work or calls abroad and customers in the UK will still speak to operators based in our UK call centres,’ said Allen Black, BA’s national officer . ‘It is purely about reducing our costs and making our UK operation into a more effective and efficient operation.’

BA said the annual number of telephone calls to the airline’s five call centres in the UK had fallen by 34 per cent in the last two years from 13m to 8.5m, as people turn increasingly to internet bookings.
