According to IDC’s latest forecasts, the Western European market for packaged software is set to grow in 2003 to almost 46,700 million in license, maintenance, and service fee revenue, excluding non-commercial software. Overall, the market will increase to more than 62,600 million by 2007.
“Among the different sectors, public sector and financial services will be the sectors offering the more attractive opportunities, with the best potential for software,” said Giuliana Folco, program director, IDC European Vertical Markets. “Their dominance is not undisputed in all primary software markets (applications, application development and deployment, system infrastructure), though, with retail/wholesale, business services, and utilities outperforming them in some instances for both 2003 and 2007 revenue growth.”
For systems infrastructure software, public sector, business services, and healthcare are contributing more positively to growth with the rapid expansion of their investments in infrastructure software technology as part of the ongoing modernization of IT systems and rapid adoption of new solutions.
The largest revenue opportunity for software vendors is within the application software space. According to Ms. Folco, successful penetration into financial services, government, and retail/wholesale entities will offer enterprise application vendors sizeable rewards throughout the forecast period.
