KPN Holland has decided to take action against spam through SMS messages following pressure from consumer organizations in Holland. Providers of SMS services have been warned by KPN not to include advertisements in these messages and to provide consumers with the information they need to stop those services.
Consumer organizations in Holland uttered a strong protest against providers of information through SMS messages without giving notice how to stop the subscriptions and the nimbly insert of advertisement. KPN concluded that the code of conduct concerning SMS messages was frequently violated by providers and warned them to behave otherwise.
KPN felt obliged to take further steps to tackle this problem. In the meantime KPN announced stronger supervision starting this month. From this moment on it is forbidden to send SMS messages to customers without giving notice about the subscription fees and without a clear consent of the owner of the mobile phone.
